Type of Tourists

Here are three different types of tourists. Leisure tourists like to relax on vacation. They avoid visiting busy places. They like going to places with nice weather. They often stay at hotels with beaches and pools. They enjoy simple activities such as reading and swimming. Adventure tourists are very different. They love doing exciting things. For example, they might hike in the Alps. Or they might ride elephants in Thailand. Cultural tourists enjoy learning about foreign cultures. They tour places such as museums and palaces. They try speaking foreign languages and eating traditional foods. Which type of tourist are you?

An Important Moment

I love playing the piano. In the future, I want to be a famous pianist. I hope to perform worldwide. This was not always my dream, however. When I was younger, playing for strangers was scary. I only let my friends and family listen. Then I met Ms. Lee. She was my friend’s aunt. She was also the city’s best piano teacher. She offered to give me lessons, but only if I did one thing. I had to play a song for her. At that moment, I made a decision. I really wanted her to teach me. So, I decided to stop being afraid. I sat at my friend’s piano, and I played. When my performance ended, my friend’s whole family clapped. Ms. Lee said I was excellent. She wanted to be my teacher. I was so excited! That’s when I discovered that I loved performing.

Lookism

One troubling trend in the modern world is ‘Lookism.’ This is the idea that beautiful or attractive people get treated better in society than others. A beautiful person has more advantages in life, while ugly people have disadvantages. Lookism can cause a lot of problems in society. Because of lookism, many people are very concerned about their looks nowadays. They worry about their clothes, their appearance, and how thin or fat they are. They try to be fashionable by always wearing the coolest clothes. They focus so much on beauty that they don’t think about intelligence or happiness. In the worst cases lookism can cause people to get more and more plastic surgery to change their bodies and faces. A teenager often goes on a very severe diet to get slim. Sometimes several teenagers who are overly concerned about their appearance have a fight about who looks best. People become slaves to fashion. There are more important things than looking good. To stop lookism, people must stop judging others based on appearance.

A Housework Schedule for a Lazy Little Sister

Ally and Samantha are sisters. Ally is older. She is the sister who does more of the housework. She does most of the work herself because Samantha is lazy and hates doing chores. When it’s her turn to put the trash outside she pretends to be studying. When Ally asks Samantha to clean up the kitchen she says, ‘I feel sick, I need to lie down.’
One day, Ally was so annoyed by Samantha that she wanted to scream. ‘This is so unfair,’ she said. ‘I’m the one who does all the housework. This isn’t justice! I’m going to make a monthly housework schedule for Samantha and me. I’m going to keep a record of every time she skips her chores.’
So Ally made the schedule and hung it on the bedroom wall. Then she showed Samantha the schedule and said, ‘From now on, you must do your chores when it’s your turn, OK?’ Samantha promised she would follow the schedule.
The next night after supper, Samantha spilled milk on the kitchen table. Ally frowned, but she was secretly happy. ‘Clean up your mess, Samantha.’ But Samantha laughed and pointed to the housework schedule. ‘Ally, tonight it’s your turn to clean the kitchen!’

The Scary Sampson House

Last week, my friend dared me to photograph a haunted house. Of course, I immediately said yes. The house was built by a man named Edward Sampson. He built it a century ago, so it is very old. Today, many people believe that his ghost still roams the house. They say that Edward was very wealthy and very strange. He did not keep his money at the bank. Instead, he built a house and hid his wealth inside. Edward had a reputation for being mean. He did not have any friends or family. After his death, no one could find his treasure. One theory is that his ghost still hides his treasure. However, the fear of Edward’s ghost doesn’t prohibit people from exploring the house. It is often visited by teenagers like me. Our motive isn’t to find the treasure. We just want to demonstrate our bravery. I only pretended to be brave, though. The truth is that the house terrified me! It was empty, but it didn’t feel empty. The wind sounded like a whisper warning me to go away. I took one photo and then I ran all the way home. Edward and his house will never again be visited by me!

What Happened to the Ancient Wonders?

The seven ancient wonder of the world were structures whose extraordinaty size and magnificent made them famous. Today, only one of these ancient wonders, the pyramids of Giza, can be seen. What happened to the others? The great lighthouse of Alexandria was the world’s first lighthouse. It was an enormous tower whose light shone for miles into the sea. The architects who designed it were brilliant : for a long time it was the tallest building in the world. It was destroyed by a series of earthquakes which caused the tower to crack and collapse. The Colossus of Rhodes was a 30-metre high statue of an ancient Greek sun god. It overlooked the harbor of the city of Rhodes and was built to celebrate victory after a military conflict. It too was destroyed by an earthquake. The grand, beautiful temple of Artemis in Ephesus was once burned down by a man who desired to become famous for any reason, even destroying a temple. To punish the man for his crime the city executed him. Alexander the Great rebuilt the temple and greatly enlarged it. The temple was attacked by armies many times and never repaired. The ruins became buried in dirt and grass. The discovery of the temple's ruined foundations in 1869 was an exciting historical event. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were legendary gardens whose exact location is unknown. According to the legend, these gardens were built onto the side of an artificial mountain. Beautiful fountains flowed down the garden walls. In reality, it probably never existed at all.
